What causes plump skirts?

Whenever I see nice images of zoas/palys, the skirts are usually thick/plump. Mine are all skinny. I don't dose iodine. Could that be the issue? I used to have crappy PC lighting, but now have super nice LEDs. So, I don't think it's lighting.

I think flow has a lot to account for the "plumpness" of a skirt. I know that the zoas I have in heavy flow have skinnier skirts and in most cases it is the opposite for my other zoas. Maybe it is a characteristic of some zoas? I am not sure.

There is nothing wrong with PC lighting. I have a Current USA 2x18w light and most of my polyps have nice long skirts. There are a couple of things that affect the skirt length lighting, polyp type, tank flow etc. My Jokers have always had short fat skirts no matter where in my tank I place them. I assume means their polyp type dictates skirt lenght. I have some other polyps that will have short skirts in low flow areas and long skirts in more flow. Even current tank conditions affect skirt length in my eyes.

I used to have an 18 watt PC. It did a fine job. I was even able to keep a birdsnest under it okay. But everything lost color and stretch out. Also, the skirts were skinny. I switched to the PAR38 5x3watt LEDs which pumps out WAY more light than the PCs. Color is much better, but skirts are still skinny. Some are long, some are short, but not plump. I'm not so much concerned with length as much as I want healthy looking fat zoas with plump skirts. Right now, they look like they're all on a diet.

would like to know myself! Taggin along.

I'm doing a lot of digging on this one. Here are some links to help. I'm double dipping on a few forums for this one. Lots of opinions so far.

I used to have very low water flow in my tank and my zoa skirts were plump and short... I put a new pump in with a much higher flow and within one day, all my colonies of zoas and palys had longer, thinner skirts... Changed over night...

Definitely flow. No doubt.

i have noticed most of my zoas have long skinny skirts too..some look cool, others look like aiptasia..lol

i have a 40 breeder, and i only run a 500 gph return pump and a k2...i was running the 500gph return pump,k2, and an mp10....

so not sure...i wish i could reverse it LOL!!
