What Clam do you recommend?

I would like to buy my first clam this weekend.

I have 150W halide with 2 X 24W Actinics. 20" Deep.

Calcium is 400ppm

ALK is 11 DKH

Good established DSB.

50LBs of LR in a 50 USG tank

Coral wise softies + LPS: Torch, 2 X Goniopora colanies fairly big.

One BTA.

I would really like a maxima but a deresa may have to do. Could I get a maxima with my setup?

Thanks

what's the k rating on your halide bulb, out of curiosity? you can get a deresa, but it would likely outgrow your tank in not much time, a maxima might work at the top of the tank, but it depends on that k rating of the halide as to how well it would keep its initial color

What Clam do you recommend?

IMO & IME

The easiest to hardest to keep.

1. Derasa
2. gigas
3. squamosa
4 hippopus
5. croceas
6. maxima being the hardest to keep.

Croceas are the slowest to grow of the Tridacnids and gigas is the fastest to grow and grow fast

As are as lighting, a good rule of thumb is the more colorful or vibrent the more intense lighting is recommended.

Hope this helps a little. :)

i don't mean to hijack, hopefully this Q will help the original thread starter somewhat

what are some of the things i should look for when i'm purchasing a clam?

You should make sure the clam is responsive. Wave your hand over the clam and make sure it retracts. Second is look for a big round hole in the mouth. You DONT want a big gap. It should look like a slit.
