I bought 75lbs work and it filled my 180 pretty good. Took about 2 months for it to seed with the help of 30lbs of live rock from my ohter tank. It is very light weight.

it's coral rock that is not alive,(dry..sun bleached) it's cheaper then live rock which is delivered wet and taken out of the ocean .
dry rock can be "seeded" with small pieces of live rock and within 6 months you can't tell the difference .
I posted some pictures of my new 120 the rock in the center is composed of dry rock I got from NERACII last year and some stuff I got from Eric. I epoxed the rock together to make the caves and over hangs.

I jsut want to add some "dry rock" is actually old rock from reefs, some is real rock that isn't from reefs, and some is artificial (Aragocrete or other). Also, people are doing really neat things using "Great Stuff" insulation foam to make interesting rocklike things int he tank (good to cover unsightly powerheads etc too)--it's nontoxic and you can paint it.

Thanks for reminding me,
I guess I need to get with Eric on this, boy what happened to this fall ?
We are looking forward to it you guys put together a great event.

Glad to hear you'll be there, I am making some pretty big changes to my tank, and rock is a large part of the plan.

Ok while we are on this subject... If I want to add rock to my tank will it cause a cycle? If so what do most people do that have established tanks? What is the best way to add rock?

Dead rock should not create a cycle since there is no die off of organisms. I can tell you that is 3-4 months the rock blends in perfect. I will be showing pics of my rock now 6 months old at the next meeting.

One of the things I remember about Marko's rock is that there are "leftovers" on there that create a need to cycle or cure it. Am I wrong?

While there is no die off like in trans shipped live rock, there will be dried and trapped organics that need to cycle.
If it's going into an established tank, we like to soak/ pre cycle it in a Rubbermaid or similar, frequent water changes using the discard water from your main system changes, skimming and a product like the fritz turbo start will speed things up and get the seeding process started.
Hint: generous use of carbon will help out your skimmer

For something different check out a thread in RHF's forum where Randy suggests that a Muriatic(sp) acid bath would fast track this break down of organic matter.

My friend ordered 100 lbs, very nice rock but you definitely need to cycle them. When he placed them in this tank, his entire aparentment stunk! His ammonia was off the chart.

my 2 cents.
