what did everyone catch this summer in the long island sound?

If your asking about tropicals, it's the south shore bays that they are found in. Not many make into the sound. Here's a thread we have going on local collecting of tropicals.

thanks bill for the correction. i think its amazing people are able to catch these tropical fish up here. ill check out the thread.

I caught Codium. OK so I really diden't "catch" it and it wasen't in the Sound, but Peconic. OK so I really should not have replied to this thread but I just wanted to say hello to Bill.

The Gulf Stream is a wondrous thing :D

agreed bill. ive only read about the gulf stream in books, but to have evidence of it thru the tropicals people catch up here is just astounding to me.

Yeah, better get out collecting while the Gulf Stream still can make its way North... they say the melting ice caps and that addition of cold fresh water will shut down that conveyor belt of warm salt water, which could make for a mini ice age in Northern US and Europe as we'll lose the heat from the Gulf Stream
So, after that cheery note, get wet this month as it could be the last! ;)

Here's a good water temp map of the Gulf Stream. Really gives you a good grasp of what the stream is about. It's eddies comming off the Gulf as it makes that turn at Hatteras that bring the tropicals in to our south shore.

As it stands im going tommorrow with a few people so if we get anything of interest ill be sure to post pics :) Yay i will finally get my net wet LOL

I am going out in the Sound in a little while. I won't be collecting anything but a possable hangover :eek1:

Just remember if your first pull doesn't last that long, subsequent pulls will be better and much more satisfying... ;) :smokin:

thanks bill... makes more sense.

joe, i think you are right. better pull now and often, or you wont get any more chances in the future......:)

i finally broke in my net! Todays catch was a ton of silversides, puffers, pilot fish, very small butterfly of some sort, bunch of pipe fish, seahorses, few others i cant recall. Pretty cool time!
Thanks Bill :)

Chris, how big are the puffers and what kind are they? Are they the common northern blowfish or something else?
Also how large are the pipefish?
I got a load of crabs but they are blue claws for dinner
