What do centrifugal pumps do?

Do you mean the Turbelle Classics? They are basically a powerhead but the motor is external so no heat is transferred. They are more complicated mechanically but they can be rebuilt almost indefinitely.

Centrifugal refers to the type of pump and how it pumps. They all do the same thing they just do it differently as compared to a positive displacement pump for example.

Yes, the 2002 specifically.

How far down into the tank can the output be mounted? What is the output deflector like?

The output deflector is basically like a spoon and it can direct the flow and fan it out a bit. The outlet is just about 1" under the surface.
