What do you do with a large Gigas?

After you've grown these large clams in your tank for a while, and they're getting borderline masive, what do most of you do with them?

Just a little confused; large clam, small tank....

cook them up with some butter and garlic. By the time the clam gets that large you'll have a bigger tank :-) That or someone will be more than happy to buy it from you I'm sure.
 
you must not live in florida, here in aquarium world you can find someone, heck call up the local public aquarium they'll probably be more than happy to take it off your hands.
 
dude, you couldnt be more incorrect. Aquariums hate taking in people's mistake buys. That is the same thing everyone who has a nurse shark says- "when it gets big, i'll just take it to the aquarium."

To answer the original question, you may find someone local to take it off your hands, but you may just have to invest in a larger tank. No offense, but you should ahve thought of this.
 
I guess I have better luck with public aquariums than most *shrug* had no problem moving a ribbon eel to a public aquarium, but then they are pretty sweet.
 
they really arent that hard to get rid of here where im at.we have quite a few large tank owners and one of our LFS will take them on trade or credit.

Sorry but I have to say that you couldnt be more wrong. I work with several large aquariums and they love freebies. Alot of times they count on donations to initially stock their reef tanks and many would be more than happy to take a large Gigas off of your hands. A nurse shark is ultra common and most Aq are not looking for them but a Gigas is a completely different ball game, especially a large one! Tell ya what, if it gets to big and you cant find a home, PM me and ill find a home for it. The only reason I can see an aquarium not wanting it is either they don't have any space to put it or the seller wants some ridiculous price for the clam. Alot of times they will even pay shipping, they just don't have big budgets to pay bookoo bucks for clams. Hell, Dr FS has had some 6-8" Gigas for sale for like $300-400! People are buying those like hot cakes, you wont have a problem getting rid of it.

So, basically, if someone chooses to get a gigas, they need to either:

-get a larger tank
-find someone to sell it to
-donate/sell it to an aquarium
-consume it (jk)


On a side note, how heavy is a gigas when full grown?

How would one brace the tank/rock (wherever the clam sits) for the amount of weight added?

there are so many beautiful clams out there why the hell do you want a clam that gets two meters wide???

SORRY if i sound harsh but there are a million people on here who will go up your butt if you buy a fish that gets to large for our tanks but nobody gives a damn about a clam?

you guys need to wise up

Sorry to say, but I also work with several large aquariums, and they mock and ridicule the hobbyist who thinks their outgrown pets are a public aquariums dream. For every 1 animal that is perhaps taken in, hundreds are likely turned away. Many are even illegally and unknowungly dumped into their collections. Perhaps, in this particular case, and aquarium would be interested in a large clam, so I am willing to concede that in this particular case. But how many times do you think someone has asked them to take their pacu, or oscar, or arowana, or lionfish, or eel, or iguana, or boa, etc etc etc. Zoological insitutions as a whole DO NOT LOVE getting "Freebies" as you have put it. It is irresponsible and against the code of ethics responsible aquariums follow. In fact, many aquariums can get such animals from other institutions for free on a tool called "animal exchange".

Just out of curiosity, what aquariums are we speaking of that will pay hundreds in shipping to acquire an animal from a private vendor?

If you have a large clam and can ship him I would be more then willing to take him in... I do quite well with large giagas, just look for yourself :)

Can I ask you a couple of questions?

-Is that a copperbanded butterflyfish i see in your shot? if so, how is it doing, and all that jazz for feeding?

-How large is the clam, width as well?

How long did it take you to grow it out that way, or did you purchase a larger one?

I assume its in the 360? what are the dimensions?

Yes he does. I have gone through a few MH bulbs if he gets really upset because the colum of H20 has shattered the outter glass on the bulbs before.

LOL I love the clams! They are my best coral and they filter besides looking great and with the new system the more the better!

Yes that is a copperband, I have had him since he was a baby. I had him in my origional system which was a 30g then he went to my 55 then into the 360 as he grew, and soon to be moved into the newest system. He has always done wonderful without any problems. He is a hardy eater of flake food and amphapods. The Clam was purchased as a XL and has out grown the 360 which was a prompting to the new system. He is about 12" tall maybe 14" wide if I could see him fully expanded ( not really sure cause he is cramped) and a full 24" long. He last weighted in at around 30lbs. which was a yr ago when I placed him in the system. My tank is 88"x24"x36" (LxWxH). Hope that anwsers all your questions and if I can be anymore help feel free to ask:)
 
Do i even want to know how you moved a 30lb clam without having it send a geyser of seawater all over your equipment?

Was the CBB purchased locally, and how often do you feed it?

Also, to the rest of you, anyone else out there have a larger gigas and would care to share your experiences?
