What do you feed your clowns?

wills

In Memoriam
I've had my Nano Cube up and going for about 4 weeks now. The cycle finished and I added some corals (Acans, Favia, Shrooms, Candycane, and a few unknowns).

I got my first ever saltwater fish today, a Seabe Clownfish.

I asked the guy at the LFS (Who I'm sure knows what he's talking about) what to feed them and he said
"What are you feeding the want now"

"Nothing, but I have a bottle of Zooplankton and Cyclopzees. " - Me

"I wouldn't do anything, if you overfeed the tank you'll get algae blooms and your corals will outgrow your tank"

"Oh o.k."

I know the guy at the LFS has an amazing system and in the past he has bragged about never - EVER - feeding his system but mine is still new and doesn't have the pods-bacteria-goodies his system has.

So what do clownfish eat?

Do clown eat things like mysis or brine shrimp?
If I fed the tank Zooplankton or Cyclopzees would he get anything from it?

Is there a flake or pellet food that you have had good luck with?

I got this off Dr. Foster and Smith:
"The Sebae Clownfish will eat almost anything it is fed, but the diet should include meaty food items such as chopped shrimp and herbivore preparations."

What is herbivore preparations? I'm not cooking a salad for this thing :)

Help me fellow reefers, your my only hope (Sorry, I'll keep Star Wars quotes to myself in the future)

So what do clownfish eat?
Mysis, brine, F1&2, nori, prime reef, flakes.

There's a big difference between "feeding the tank" and feeding your fish. I think the guy at your LFS may have been confused about what you were asking. Clowns are pretty omnivorous, so there isn't much they don't eat. Brine shrimp aren't too nutritious, but I like to give my maroon some live brine shrimp from time to time as a treat. The whole tank (including the corals) goes crazy when I throw some of them in. Depending on how small your clown is, cyclopeeze may be too small, unless it's in clumps, but otherwise it's a very good food. I mainly use mysis, various other plankton, Formula 2, and if I'm cooking seafood, I'll chop some up really small and feed my fish.

Thanks MarinaP and Island Crow, you guys are very helpful.

I put a little zooplankton in the tank and he went crazy.

I'll try the Mysis and prime reef.

Thanks again

I see you are on the illinois wisconsin border, you should make a trip out to Rod's Reef, he makes his own special blend of reef food and it seems that my clowns as well as many many other's clowns LOVE the stuff.....Check out his site for ingredients/directions!...

Hey craftytony,

I've heard of Rods but he is way to far away. I am more in the Gurnee Mills/Six Flags area. Otherwise I'm sure I'd go there for everything.

I feed mine Mysis, cyclop-eeze, and a concoction from a sponsor here that they love....I feed heavily on the cyclop-eeze, I can't get them to eat a lot of algae stuff yet, I have been trying but they thumb their nose at it so far.....

It's definitely worth it sarahkucera, Rod is probably one of the nicest guys you'll meet!

Absolutely true, and fish go nuts over his food.

I feed my clowns a mix of tropical fish flakes, Blood worms, and veggie drop, new thing im going to do subsitute brine with mysis.

I feed my pair Brine Shrimps, F1 Flakes, Cyclopeeze. However they are always hungry tho, wants to put any "floating" particle in their mouth to try it out, then spit it out if they don't like it.

Hey Tony (or is it "The Insider")

Any idea when we might find out for sure? This week, next week, next month?

Thanks

I had my clown about 5 months now and he gets flakes 2-3 times a week, the rest of the time I cut pieces of fresh tuna, frozen squid or frozen shrimps. He loves the shrimp and tuna
