What do you look for ?

at a quick glance I look to make sure the water is flowing good, fish are swimming as normal and corals are all open and healthy.

I have a few polyps that close more easily than others. They are my quick indicator. If I'm cleaning the glass more often, that's a clue too. The quality and amount of goo in the skimmer tells me a lot.

Small bubbles accumulating at the waters edge in both the DT and the sump is an indicater for me. While everything might look great, (corals/fish) it just means that the water is getting a little old, and the tank could use a small water change.

Pretty much anything that is different than the day or week before. If a coral is closed maybe a power head has moved maybe parasite. More algea check parameters. Fish not eating check everything. If its different there's usually a reason. Corals dont close because they feel like it.
