what do you put under you tank

hi and thank you for your reply,

i wonder if you place anything between the bottom of your DT and the DT stand? i heard of people using ridge foam insulation but curious what others are doing

I put rigid foam. Contrary to the usual advise I do this on acrylic and glass tanks. It hasn't been a problem yet. I've had tanks for 50 yrs.

It depends on the tank and manufacturer recommendations, many trimmed tanks are not supposed to need anything, and in fact some will even say do not use any foam board or anything.
My Leemar came w/ a PVC bottom already applied, nothing needed, yet my SCA I just picked up came w/ a thin foam/cardboard sheet they recommend using.
Check manufacturer recommendations to be safe.

I don't have anything under mine. The frame of the tank just sits on the stand.

That is all there should be under a rimmed tank. Foam alleviates possible issues with point loading, when the glass is in direct contact with the stand top, and only for semi-floated, or non-floated glass bottom panels. It does nothing for anything else. In some cases, it can destroy the bottom panel.

This 'usual advice' comes from the tank manufacturers, so it is not "usual advice" rather the truth of the practice. It was the same 10 years ago, it was the same 50 years ago, just no one was asking the question; in fact the notion did not even come up until acrylic aquariums came into popular use. What was intended to apply to "rimless" glass tanks, was instantly misapplied to acrylic aquariums, and then later misapplied to rimmed tanks, as a cure to out of whack stands (it isn't however.) This is an example, of the direct effect, of repeating advice with no understanding of the reasons. In other words, putting foam under everything, is a direct result of the internet (acutally the www part of the internet,) which did not exist for the hobbyists until the early 1990's, give or take.

I just researched the same subject and was helped by many of the samp people. I also contacted the manufacturer, deep blue professional, they told me to not put anything under my bottom rimed tank. They did tell me the stand had to be flat to prevent the tank from flexing and breaking the bottom pane of glass.

They are stating the obvious on that one. :hmm5:

I will add a vote for Styrofoam from HD, I have no plastic frame around my tank, so the glass sits directly on the foam.

What about drawer liner? I've heard of a few people using this

Again, the tank manufacturer will tell ya what you need under the tank. Some say 1/2", others say 3/4", others may tell you the mat is fine; a function of the tank size is a work here too. The idea is to protect the bottom from point loading, and the thinner the material used, the less protection there is. Folks do things without understanding the why of it, which is not a good practice, and it has little relation to what is actually required.
