what do you think about hob refugiums

i have been struggling to alter my sump to include a refugium and am now back up and running with a plain sump again, i want a refugium and have seen threads where guys are talking about them which hang on the back, presuming they can hang on the back of the tank, if this is the case are they any good or not, ive seen a couple of different types which are quite small and i could easily fit on my tank but dont want to bother if its well basically garbage, any views on this will be gratefully recieved:)

Not garbage, but it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Do you want a place for pods to reproduce without predation? Yeah, it'll help a little with that. Do you want a place to grow Chaetomorpha or another type of algae to take up nutrients? It'll do that as well. Will a small refugium on a good sized aquarium do either of well enough to make a big difference in the overall health of your aquarium? Probably not.

I think even a small refugium WILL make a difference in the overall health of the aquarium, a big difference, probably not. But since I added this lil 4.5 gallon HOB fuge onto my sump, I run it on reverse day light cycle and it ;

a.) helps maintain pH b.) has a massive amount of pods which I can see in the main tank at night time c.) grows a crapload of macro and reduces my dependence on phoslock media (which I still use anyways because I'm a paranoid freak!) lol

I like the ecosystem fuges, but I think their miracle mud is a bunch of hokie garbage, especially for what they charge for it. But yeah those fuge's they make are durable, and nice looking. That will get the job done.

andy

thanks for that reefteck, i have not really made up my mind on this yet, but i thought if i got rid of the bio-balls and sponge that comes with the eco, and just grew cheato in some sand then it could act as a refugium and aid my filteration, i cant get a refugium under my tank but do run a sump and thought this may be a good addition, i was hoping for some good views and no doubt will get more, (hopefully) and then may get 1 may not depending on RC views, thankyou for your views:)

I've got a CPR AquaFuge II on my sump-less 55. It's awesome! The benefits of having a refugium shouldn't be understated.

not a problem. btw you might look into the CPR hob fuges, they are similar, probably just as spendy, but if you have a hard time getting things configured because of size constraints, CPR fuges are really slim. So that's just another option for you. I kind of like the ecosys fuges better though if you can make it fit!

ltz,
andy

thanks again andy, btw what is a cpr, im not being sarcastic, i honestly dont know what 1 is, as you say its slim, and based on that it may be more suitible, worth a try anyhow, the ecosys will probably just fit to be honest, but if i can understand what the cpr is i may look online and then ill have 2 options

oh-right, i presume it made in the usa?, if so it may be better for me to think about the ecosys, as i have mentioned though i have not made up my mind yet, just looking and considering my options, and hopefully the reefers on RC will help me decide

I've seen pictures where the fuge is mounted above the tank. Some of the water from the return pump from the sump is directed up to the fuge. The fuge is drilled so the water is gravity fed back to the DT. You can use any aquarium for a fuge and there is a very small expense involved.

If you have room above and behind your tank for that option, it works really well. No crushed pods from the return pump, even though I don't think very many get crushed.

really good views there guys, im pleased with those and im slowly starting to think it may be a good idea, thankyou again much appreciated

I've got one on my 20 gallon high, the thing practically covers the entire backside of the tank. I think it extremely effective, plus the way mine is hanging there, a lot of light from my power compacts penetrates through the wall of the fuge to the cheato.

I've got about 3-4 inches of sand, lots of rocks crammed in there, and cheato on top.

Mines also got a skimmer cup built into the side of it.

How much weight are you willing to hang on the side of your tank????

i don't think i like the idea of hanging 35 pounds on a plate of glass.

How much weight can you hang on a tank before you run into problems?

i dont know how heavy they are, at the moment its just a thought, if you look at the website i posted on my second post you will see it is fairly small, im not sure how much, it doesnt look heavy though, i would investigate this before purchasing, but as i said its just a thought at present

I made a HOB refungium out of my old Aquaclear 110. I made some mods to it and it work very well. Cheato growing, plenty of pods and nitrates at 0 ppm.

nice thought bruno, it just the ticket, i have a skimmer already in my sump so probably would not need another which is in the hang on, but the refugium bit looks great, as for the 96, well in 1989 96 of our fans were crushed to death in a stadium in sheffield, it was a sad sad day, i went to anfield the other day for a stadium visit and saw the memorial mosiac, it was sad seriously upsetting, whilst there i met lots of people who knew some of the guys who died, its just my way of remembering them thats why its on my signature, a dark day in our teams history, thanks for asking
