What do you think??

I am looking to kill a few birds with one stone here. I do not have a sump as of yet. I have a HOB Protein skimmer.

I want to:

1. Have a top off system
2. Increase water flow
3. Be able to run carbon when/if needed
4. Take the skimmer of the back of the tank to make it look better.

Is this system any good? Also I am wondering if anyone has used or seen it. I would like to take the filters out and add live rock and I am wondering if I can put the heater in there. I also need to conserve space as it is going under a 39 gal tank without much room.

Your thoughts if this would work with this system with what i want to do...

I know you mentioned you don't have a sump yet, but....any chance of adding a sump? A plain Rubbermaid container would do it and would take care of your dead bird list ;) You certainly don't need to have a complicated sump at all and it would be cheaper and prettier than adding more stuff to the main tank.

If I take out the filters if possible and add live rock wouldnt this be a sump? It has a 4 gal auto top off.

I would be eliminating stuff from the tank (heater, protein skimmer) if the heater would fit in the sump of this design.

How would you setup a sump with a rubbermaid container???

Main tank overflow from a skimmer box into container-of-choice where all your unsightlies, skimmers, rocks, etc. are kept. Submersible pump returning water to the main tank via flexible tubing and an overhanging elbow. No drilling required.

Are you saying that you'd put all the equipment inside an auto topoff container? If so, I wouldn't do it. If it ran dry, you'd end up cracking your heaters, exposing your rock to air and possibly creating another cycle, and burning out your skimmer and return pumps.

from my own experience the whole rufuge idea was a little intimidating. with nobody phisically there for solid advice i was looking for alternative to the refugium idea. i would do whatever you need to do to start upgrading to a fuge type system. If you cant afford it well thats another story butt if you can figure out what you want and get another tank, or drill the one you have.

Where did you see this at. I'm interested, as I can't do a sump because of space.

This is why I want one. Mainly because of space and I NEED a top off system. If I can put the heater in the sump/filter end it would also be a bonus.

Ok I ordered it. So I will let everyone know how it goes. Hopefully I can insert LR and heater and the top off will work well. Then if the Protein skimmer doesnt work for **** I will see if my current one will work somehow on this system. I dont think it will but ya never know.

Hello,
I have one of these on my tank, seems to be working OK so far. (1 month)

Matt

Matt,

Will I be able to fit live rock in it instead of the filter media and a heater as well? I actually want to use it as a sump with LR and not a wet/dry . How is the protein skimmer working?

Thanks!!
