What do you use to measure water temp?

I just got a Neptune Jr. controller and the temp reading on that thing is 1.3 higher then both of my coralife digital meters. Both coralife have the same exact reading. Since the Neptune cost me almost 40 times more than the coralife, is it safe to assume the Neptune has a right reading and the coralife not??

I use a lab grade glass thermometer to calibrate my controllers:

This accurate yet economical thermometer is made with nontoxic red liquid (no mercury) on white background. The range is 0 to 230°F and -20 to 110°C. Requires minimum immersion depth of 3". Overall length is 12".

I ran into the same from the last GB, so just adjusted my AC Jr 0.9 to match the Coralife. I figure even if it is off, it could be by much.

I've got one of those stickers on the outside of the glass, and I've got an IR temperature reader that I got from Fisher Sci.
This is what the IR reader is....it's great when matching the WC and tank temps.

I did some fast talking with our rep. when they came out and got a pair of them for $20...one for the lab...one for the tank.. ;)

I use a regular ol' thermometer, el crapola special :)

However I'm leaning towards what gresham is using, we got a bunch in the lab that go up to 0-50C but the kicker is they have a resolution of 0.1C. And they also use the "red liquid" (alcohol) in them, just incase one busts.

Thanks Everyone!!
Gresham,
Do you know any LFS carry that brand? I hate to pay $8 for the item and pay $10 for shipping :D ..

No LFS I know of in the states carries any lab grade equipment unfortunatly. I'm actually getting ready to place an order, want me to get you one?

might want to see if anyone else wants in Gresh... maybe for delivery at the Dec BAR mtg ? :). Just be sure to collect the 2.5% PayPal fees, or whatever they charge, plus enough to cover the increase in shipping costs :)

BTW, I would be interested in one also, to double check our AC Jr and Pinpoint wireless thermometers :)

Medusa carries a nice one I use but it is $32. It is a lab grade mercury model. It is long and only measures from 66 to 80 so the increments are large and easy to read very accurately.

A-20 Precision mercury calibrating thermometer, 66ºF-80ºF: $32.00

For an expensive device, you would think their stuff will work correctly out of the box. Make me wondering how accurate the pH reading is  ..

I use a Radio Shack indoor/outdoor digital thermometer. The "outdoor" probe has happily sat in my tank without any problems!

These are easily picked up at non-aquarium stores, typically places that sell laboratory equipment and the like. Now whether or not there is a store locally that sells them is anyones guess but mine now :)

I've been using the Radio Shack thermometer for 5 years. The probe must be stainless or titanium I can't remember. It was cheep and it's worked fine.
