ok, i have a friend who is opening a store soon. its gonna be real small, but mainly saltwater fish and some dry goods. also, will be able to order ANYTHING YOU WANT, freshwater or salt. maintanence and all that too. like i said, it will be small, and he wants to keep it quiet until he is gonna open. i can tell you it will be on the west side, but he doesnt want any more detials out. he is planning on opening in mid-march. he just wants to get a feel of what you guys want in dry goods and all that. any help would be appreciated by him and will also make a better store for you to get what you want.

thanks in advance for all your help!

Wow...where exactly will he be opening at on the west side? Sounds like it might do OK.

I wish him the best of luck...these are tough times to be opening a shop. Especially if his prices are what some would consider too good. Competition can become ugly..."barriers to entry into the market are high" as an economist would say.

Keep us posted! If it's on the west side of Cleveland maybe I'll have to stop on the way home from work one day once he opens. When it comes to stock, just as long as he can order pretty much anything will put him in good standing in my book. I know keeping inventory can be expensive so as long as he can order it I'm a happy camper.

I think keeping the staples of foods, salts, test kits, basically the things that the chain gangs don't have or are very high on. Then deliever what you promise when ordering; have enough connections with different suppliers that if you promise something and one guy binds up that you aren't stuck. or at the very least be up-front about it if you do get stuck not being able to fill an order. I have had some great experiences with the little guy shop (Rick's comes to my mind) and a not so good one with a different small shop.

I very rarely go to chain stores because I have had too many issues with fish health and poor advice. I think many others feel the same.

In short, size doesn't mean that much ...(oops I am better off not finishing that part) anyway good service, honest treatment and hard work (lots and lots of that)

Briney summed thing up nicely....btw Dave, where do you teach at??? I got my B.S. from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, and used to travel around that area alot when I was at college.

Hi,

Are you looking for vendors(names) that we would buy or generally what type of dry goods? Your friend could make a killing selling things such as salt, pumps, lights a little over costs.
No place in the Cleveland area does that. But then that makes it's hard to make a profit unless you buy volume.

Dave

he is looking more for what types of salt, test kits, foods, etc that are the most in demand so that he can stock up on them and have them in house most of the time. he is already maintanience business and has contacts with vendors thru that. also, having many accounts with the maintanience, he or one of his workers could probably deliver to your house anything he would have to order for you.

thanks for all the positive feedback, keep it coming!

Salifert kits

Ocean Nutrition foods, DT's GP's & Phyto, Two Little Fishes Nori and flakes

Kalkwasser powder (ESV)

URI VHO bulbs, 250/400 watt MH bulbs

IO salt, if he can do better than 31.99 a pale that would be a plus

Oh ya and lots of nice colored sticks would be a bonus

If he would give 5 to 14 day live gauentee in live stock like the mail orders do I think we would all be there. I order almost everything because a $50 fish that dies on the way home is too much for me to lose. My only drygood I can never seem to get down here is PH buffer and frozen shrimp.

dude im gonna wish your friend some serious luck. Odells (west side, used to be all champs) has ciclids, FW, and NOW salt water (thanks to me :) ) oh..and herps..

things i like he does..takes TRADES, all kindsa equipment..talks to the customers on the spot..if you know what your talkinga bout and can help setup some other species, he listens..

so..id really like to see that in more stores..the only other one is something fishy..but thats if you can get em when theyre open

oh yea, INDIVIDUAL FILTRATION!

Honest answers. Nothing turns me off more than over hearing someone getting horribly bad information. If someone asks a question you don't know then tell them that.
True story, about a month ago I was in a local store and a couple was asking about keeping Tubastrae under low light. The person helping them told them how it does great under all kinds of light, etc, etc. never once mentioning that they do great under all light because they are nonphotosynthetic and require spot feeding. Hearing about my lovely colony that gets mysis every week changed their expression.

-Everyone uses IO salt cause its usualy one of the cheapest, but he might want to keep a small stock of higher end salts
-Feeder shrimp/crabs/damsels for Predators
-keep your stock a little low so you have a higher turnover.

thanks for all the positive replys. like i said, i will definately keep you all informed as to when the store will open. still shooting for the mid march date! any more ideas, please speak up!

Great service...everything else will fall into place. I drive over 1 hour and past 3 stores that sell saltwater to buy from my LFS...I'm on the west side, my store is on the FAR west side of Cleveland. I would say that good, honest service...and let everything else fall into place!

Here's a tip, put the store on the east side. The 2 big boys are on the west already with SC and AT being on the west. Probably a little late for that eh?? That is probably going to give him some competition.

Hours of operation. This comes from me being on the eastside mostly, but I hope he will have descent ours. We have stores in Akron that are open every third Thursday of the month as long as it is a even numbered day. It's like what the hell? Do you want people to shop at your store or not??

The coral tank is great. I am glad to see he is going to have them.

I would also add that prices should be reasonable. I can get a cleaner shrimp online for >$15, but anywhere in town they are $30-$40. Offer frags for corals as a low cost alternative to the bigger versions. Sell only quality equipment, but look for low cost GOOD alternatives. Don't sell Sea Clones, just because they are cheap. Be knowlegeable, honest and freindly. If he does these things he will do quite well.

As for the people who are talking like this is a long shot to be successful-I respectfully disagree. We should all know by now we are eager for a quality, honest LFS with a good selection. I think we would all support it. How many times do you go back to the LFS that are close to you, just to be dissapointed over and over again?? I do. There is a couple I frequent with poor, service, selection and prices-BUT they are close. So I have to check them out. I get dissapointed everytime. There is no doubt in my mind if there was a SC on the eastside or even around 480 and 77, it would be very successful. As it is now many of drive 1-3 hours to go to SC for all of the things I just mentioned. That's my $.30...come on that was worth more than $.02!!!!

yes, hours are gonna be flexible. probably gonna be open at least two nights a week later than the rest until he gets settled in and see what needs to be done. it is gonna be close to 480, so easy to get to.

pricing is always gonna be an issue in retail stores. customers are always gonna want things cheaper and the store always wants more for everything. the way he is dealing with wholesalers, sounds like he will be competative. i dont know if he can come close to a $30 flame angel, but i seriously doubt anyone with a serious saltwater stock will even think of selling one for that.

as far as the east side thing is concerned, everyone wants one over here (even me!) he just got a heck of a deal to get a space here and has everything he needs at this point to do it, its just a matter of setting things up. if this place does good, he is already considering opening up on the east side. keep your fingers crossed and help him out!!! lol. thanks again for the good feedback.

I know it was about 2 years ago, but I only paid like $28 for mine through PetLand (yes, I know...evil place...but this was when I first started and didn't know any better). They were also selling Coral Beauty's for $20 at that time too. Why are $25-$30 angels such a seemingly hard commodity to come by anymore? Keep in mind, I haven't been pricing fish in over a year so I'm a bit out of the price-loop. Are they becomming harder to come by? Hurricanes having impacts on populations? Inflation? Just curious.

i work at petco(i know evil place, but not much longer) and we sell most of our fish dirt cheap. our flame angels are like $45. i know a wholesaler, also the maintanence guy who cleans our show tanks, and he cant get them cheaper than $20 at his place, so for a retailer to sell them for any less than $40, noone is making any money when you add shipping and all that in to the equation. i am new to the hobby and do not really know what prices were before hurricanes destroyed the whole southeast, but i imagine that has something to do with it. that and they shipping prices.
