what does deitrus mean??

Not sure what deitrus is ;-) but detritus means waste. Buildup of food, all waste products that build up on the sand bed. Then snails, shrimp, crabs eat it up yum yum

and detritus is just poo and the like.

dudeguy. had lights on for 7 hours today and all is well. i've got some slight hair algae on some of my rocks and when i used to leave the lights on these hairs turn brown, and when i blast the powerhead at them the brown stuff blows off the hairs. is this diatoms resting on hair algae?

that sure is what it sounds like to me diatoms grow on anything and EVERYTHING. Snails, hermits, you name it and it'll grow if it stays still more than 10 minutes or whatever. I've even got an emerald crab that's had diatoms on it whenever i move it to new tanks.

NICE!! do you toss the floss? if so, do yiu rince it before putting it in the tank?
