what does my leather do this?

ok about two week ago it did this, and than it opened back up and looked great for about two weeks and now it back to this. is it normal for this to happen? it has a shinny coating on it.
also this is a devils hand right?

My leather does that too. It just sheds a layer of skin. It looks better than ever once it's done. I think that's just what they do.
 
They will do this to shed the outer layer of mucous. The "skin" will come off easier if the piece is in a higher random flow area.

Devil's Hand just describes the shape of the coral. Looks to have that shape and looks like a sarco coral
 
Sarcophyton- It is a genus, typically referred to as a group of leather corals...ie toadstools, devils hands.

Leather corals frequently produce those mucous skins and slough them off. The are shedding any irritants or algae. The mucous skin breaks apart on its own if the coral is in a good area of flow. It only becomes problematic when the mucous "skin" is not removed in timely manner and baterica starts to accumulate.
 
Mine tend to be closed up about 1/2 the time. When they are out they are beautiful but ugly when closed. Yes the common name is Devil's Hand.

i guess the leather survived.. it is a very common incident for leathers to do that anyway.. no cause for alarm IMO...
