What Else?!

I don't have a link to the posting. You have to search the RC for it.

To come to think of it, the 2nd drain has to be the higher one. The regular drain with the ball valve below must be the one working submerged. When it clogs up, the water gets high in the overlfow and hits the 2nd drain which functions as a primary drain then.

Run this by speakeraddict. He should be able to make sense out of this. The key is to balance the drain and the return perfectly using the ball valve to keep it silent.

ok, now i feel comfortable with it!

next question, left, right or center?

advantages or disadvantages to either?

my inclination now is upper left corner.

By the way I am not recommending this particular set up that I mentioned. I just pointed it out as an option. You need to find the details and understand the pros and cons before acting on it.

The placement of the drain depends on the design of the overflow box which has a lot to do with aesthics. I don't see any problem with a dsicreet overflow box at the upper left corner or upper right corner.

If you want to add a closed loop for circulation rather than adding a few powerheads for that tank, you need to think about it now.

Search on RC.

The placement of the overflow box is mainly aesthetic. I worry more about where to place the return which affect the flow pattern.

Powerheads are not pretty. Big ones are bulky and hard to hide. They also add heat to water. However, it is very easy to obtain and you can move them easily.

A closed loop requires an external pump. You need to give a bit more careful consideration to the flow pattern since you have to cut the pipes to move the outlets around. You can have more outlets than just one to give a good circulation in the tank, but the pump capacity also has to be big enough. You can get an Ocean Motion or another wave maker to create a varied flow pattern.

I am sure there are more pros and cons out there. I have to finish an article for TFH and I really don't have time for searching on RC to give you a run down right now.
