What exactly are barnacles??

Bought a new sun polyp coral today. The piece of rock it's on also has, what appears to be, barnacles on it. I know they're reef safe but what exactly are they?

they are a filter feeders with a calcorus outer shell , if you watch them they the have a little thing that comes out to catch things out of the water,

Technically they're crustaceans. Although one would think they're in the bivalve family they're more closely related to shrimp, lobster, and crabs.
