I assume you are talking about a Magnum canister filter? If so, it's just that...a canister filter. You put carbon or filter media in it, it sucks water out of your tank, runs it through the canister and puts it back into the tank.

It should not be the sole means of your filtration. A skimmer & live rock are your primary means of filtration.

Do you means Magnesium? It help keeps your Alk and Ca balance. I started dosing it 4 months ago and have seen great improvement in growth and color.
