heres the deal i put in live rock in my 55 gallon and let it cycle for about 2 weeks my ammonia shot up and then came back down my nitrites did the same and then my nitrate was on the way down, so i was suggested to put some damsels in it to run the cycle a little bit more stronger which i did they only lasted for about 3 days sadly so i thought to my self the tank must not be ready yet. a few days ago by and out of no where i wake up and see my tank getting cloudy with a white haze, after a 2 to 3 days now my tank has a haze of brown and purple and green is coming out on my rocks like crazy they are almost all covered in this algae my protein skimmer has been off since there are no fish in it i figured what is the need to run it. what is happing with my tank??? is this normal?? how much longer till i can start putting fish in it?

2 weeks was probably not long enough. Cloudy was probably a bacteria bloom. sound like your rock was not fully cured and additional stuff died and caused another spike in the cycle.

What is your water source tap or RO? What are your parameters?

Salinity, Calcium, Alkalinity, magnesium, pH, nitrates and phosphates?

Sounds like you have an algae bloom from high nitrates and probably high phosphate.

Turn on the skimmer. It will help remove some of the stuff turning your water green. Plus it takes a while for the skimmer to break in.

cycle

cycle

Guess you must be ancious to put fish in your tank.
However, with only 2 weeks of cycling your tank is not halfway
through it process.
you have not mention circulation/filtering/or par
IMO take it slow now that you have suffered your 1st set back
and keep checking for ammo which at your stage must be
very toxic for anything to survive......
keep in Mind it takes at least 6 weeks before you see par starting
to read half descent.
also minimal water changes help your cycling.
cheers.

all my prams are right i just tested the water but i found the source of smell my live rock is going BLACK!? there are spots on it which look like coal mostly where the rock meats the sand bed can anyone tell my what this black stuff is and if i should get the rock out?

I was in the same position not too long ago and concerned with what was happening.

Patience is key. Get into a routine with the cleaning and water changes. Don't mess with your rock by taking it in and out of your tank as this will only prolong the process. Run all of your filtration even if there aren't fish in there.

drparker is probably right and you had some additional die off. I purchased my LR from an established tank and it was already cured so my "spikes" were far less drastic, but did happen. Test each day and make sure you do have the stability necessary. Wait another couple weeks and your water should have cleared and your tank should be close to the end of it's cycle.

so black not much of a problem? i turned the skimmer back on and its bubble'in like crazy but the settled stuff isn't dark anymore its a lot lighter but still is working like crazy will should i clean that rock off that has the black on it it seems to be spreading slowly
THANK YOU guys with out rc i think i would of crashed my tank already hahah.

Sounds to me like your rocks are not getting enough flow around them. What are you using for flow in .... is this the 55 in your sig im guessing.....
post some tank specs for us
Tank
skimmer
lighting
Sump?
Powerheads?

and what your current tests read. (Salinity, Calcium, Alkalinity, magnesium, pH, nitrates and phosphates, ammonia)
(if you cant test for these take your water to a LFS and have them do it and make these test kits a priority to get. Petstores are not open all the time.)

all this will help us narrow things down a bit. Everyone before me is right and slow it down. Nothing good comes fast in this hobby.

Your eyes are more reliable than a test kit. If your fish are dying, your rocks have black stuff growing all over them and your water is cloudy, I can assure you your water paramaters are not right.

Run the skimmer, start performing weekly water changes and don't add any living creatures to the tank for at least a month.

so i did a water change and put in RO water and with in a few minutes i had little white organisms swimming around my tank and crawling around my tank what the heck is that?

It was RO water my nabhior makes at home the water was made yesterday and we mixed the salt and brought the temp up for about a hr and then was dumped into the main tank a few minus later a outbreak of white worm type things started showing up its been about a hr now and their are a lot of em.

Inproperly mixed batches ( not sure on amount ) is bad for stock and will burn fish gills and stress out everybody. Its best to let it circulate atleast overnight with powerhead and then readd at a slower rate to let tank adjust.

Both "Dumping it in " and non mixed was double bad.

there are no fish in the tank just live rock n sand where did the miro white worms come from what are they?

If there are dying sponges on the rock you should scrape them off .Draw some tank water into a buckett. Pull the rock out and scrape it keeping it wet during the porcess. then put it back in. As noted by others run the skimmer and other filtration you may be using and wait untill the die off is over and the bacterial filter is established. Do not add live soon to be dead stock. Test your ammonia and wait it out. Water changes will help.

thanks everyone here for helping me threw this process... so today i wake up and go down to see the tank the little white worm like things have lessen in number and have eating whiteish brownish algee that was on the inside of my tank on the glass my glass is crystal clear now? what ever they are sure do a hell of a job cleaning up the smell has now gone down too and the skimmer is still working over time the rocks look like the coralline algae is coming back now and the grayish black spots have gone down too.... something was defiantly up with my tank i hope the little white worms aren't harmful for when i put fish in my tank,, i had the LFS test my water and they said it was fine all my prams are just right
