What happend to my zoo colony?

I got a colony of RDE's about 2 months ago from a member. They acclimated nicely and were doing ok for a while. Then they slowly started to disappear. First the center of the polyp would swell just a bit and become bulbous. Then the skirt would melt away. I've gone from about 80 polyps down to less than 10 healthy ones in about 3 weeks. All of the other zoa's in the tank are doing great, even a colony right next to the affected one. Any idea what could be wrong?

I'm not at my place right now, I will try to get some tonight after I finish cleaning up snow. The polyps that haven't yet died are closed up tight. Some are still open but are smaller than normal with very short skirts.

Feeding is not required in these corals.

Sounds like like some sort of predator or fungus. How do the flesh of the closed polyps look? Have you dipped the colony? Params of the tank?

Flesh of the polyps that were still alive looked ok, whitish color just like the other colonies. I didn't dip at all. Nearly the whole colony is gone now. All that's left are a few stragglers that look like they'll make it out ok. I seperated them from the original colony and fragged them onto a smaller rock. I inspected the original rock and couldn't see anything out of the ordinary.

yes. A couple times during a few different nights and didn't see anything. Wouldn't a predator affect other colonies though?

Fungus.... whipped out several whole colonies for me.. they look white at first then start to melt away... FW dip or at worst ZOA pox- then furan-2 dip

I had that fungus too. Lost about 4 colonies, then moved all infected zoos to QT and did furan-2 dips. I've made Furan-2 a regular dip proceedure for all new zoos i get. Works great, and no more losses!

Now I know what to look for. That colony was decimated. I have 3 polyps that survived or RDE's and 4 whammin watermelons. Luckily it hasn't spread to any of my other colonies.

I am going threw this now.I just threw out a couple of colonies and now my blue with red skirt zoas have the fungas.Id really hate to lose this colony.

Here are some pics of the fungus/bacteria that i battled with. I tried a lot of different dips. Furan-2 worked best. I did 2 dips a week for 2 weeks, total of 4 dips with 2 days between the dips. I used 1 packet of Furan-2 in 1cup of RO water for 20min. All zoos showing the fungus went into the dip.

Here are the pics of the declining polyps. Notice the brown fungus growing on the closed ones.

These frags/colonies have all survived the dip and the fungus is now gone. All of the polyps lost color, but after a few extra weeks in QT they are back to normal.

Well I just found another colony infected with the fungus. Luckily it seems I've caught it in time. Tonight I did a FW dip along with a dose of Seachem Reef Dip. It's all I could get on short notice at the LFS. It looks like it's primarily Iodine. I will post results when the colony recovers from the stress.

Search for some Furan-2. It really works well. I've incorporated it into my regular routine for all new incoming zoos.

Lugols works great along with FW in a dip for zoa predators. It will not do anything to this fungus/bacteria that is occuring.

DID the lugols dip for for fungus.. did not do jack squat... works good for other stuff though....

did the furan 2 dip as well... don't really know if that work well... I dipped all my zoo's ( affected/unaffected ) they really looked like crap after the dip ( twice in a week ) couldn't dip them again of fear of stressing them out more from the dips.

Yah mine lost all color after 2 dips in 4 days. Took about 2-3 weeks and the colors came back nicely.
