A skimmer is a worthwhile investment.I was running a g3 asm and switched to a bermuda 3-c what a difference a skimmer makes. Spend some money i have a 55 gallon also and the bermuda is bulletproof.The best part about the bermuda is you are not limited to what type of pump you run no special pump to buy. I run mine on a mag 7 but any pump in that catagorey will do the job.

asm makes a good skimmer in the range of $250 and up

the super skimmer is ok but there are much better. I use asm because they are set and forget. Also its not $250 and up. They obviously dont have a good hook up. If you will follow the others advise and use rubble rock as well as a mix of cheato and calerpa that with a G-1 asm. You should be fine. A corallife skimmer is a waste of money compared to an octopus skimmer for the same amount. Something that hasen't been mentioned is your damsels will become very aggressive and make it impossible to add any but the most aggressive fish in the future.The best advice I can give you is don't take advice from anyone who stands to make money from the advice they give you

They are generally speaking the least aggressive of the genus however over a period of time you will see them picking off the weakest one of their kind one at a time until there is just one left. that has been my experience and the experiences of others on reef central I have read. The good news is this will probably take a year or so to get down to one chromis left .I started with 7 in a 150 18 months ago and have had 1 for about 6 months now..I wish you the best of luck with your fish.

It also can be one of the most rewarding just slow down a little and read alot I have had much success with ASM skimmers and there are many simple mods you can do to them to further improve their performance.
