what happened to these zoos?

I have a 90 mixed reef. It's mostly SPS and because of that, it has been bare bottom for over a year. Everything was/is thriving except for the zoos. About 3 days ago, I noticed that they have all closed up. They were spreading like mad before that. The only thing I've done differently is upgrade my skimmer from an Aqua C EV 120 to a Euroreef 135. My parameters are ideal. Are they too ideal for the zoos?

Just guessing but maybe the new skimmer cleaned the water thus improving clarity and light penetration? Zoas may be just shocked by the light? again just a guess. Maybe try shading a few frags and see if it helps

Besides nudis, there are also newly discovered starfish predators with zoos... mostly from the caribean I think.. but a good dip/swish and also searching real good might find you a cause...

Alk/pH swings also affect zoos greatly....

3 great observations from the reefers above.

What type of lighting do you have?

Are all the zoas together in one general area?

Possible warfare going on, but all of this happened after the addition of the new skimmer right?

Is anything else in the tank affected at all?

When was the last time you added new coral or live rock?

Has this ever happened before?

If it were a few polyps or colonies I wouldn't worry as much, but all, that is a sure sign of an issue.

When you installed the skimmer, did you wash it with anything, detergent etc. I know it sounds crazy, but I had to ask.

Have you added any inverts recently?

I can't freshwater dip because the zoos took over on large pieces of base rock. This happened after the new skimmer. No other corals or inverts were added. There is still part of the colony that looks fine. It's very bizarre. Nothing has been moved near it. It has literally been fine one day, closed the next. I did not wash the skimmer first. Lighting is 2 x 175 watt Iwasaki 15k bulbs...they weren't bothered earlier. Other than the zoos, everything else has never looked better. SPS are growing wonderfully.

An update...they are literally melting away???!!!
I had a few random zoos pop up on their own over time (maybe 10 polyps) away from where my main colonies were. They were there last night. This afternoon, the remnance of their bases is left. It's very bizarre. Again, I haven't added any new inhabitants to the tank in a long time.

you might try to scrape off the infected zoas if possible with a razor. I had this happen to me just a couple weeks ago. my conony is now recovering nicely. i also did nothing new to my tank.
