What happens if you remove the host?

I've been hoping my clownfish (ocellaris pair) would start hosting something in my tank, but they just never seemed interested in anything. Until the other day. Unfortunately, they chose a large chunk of hair algae growing on the back of my tank that I was going to scrape clean during my next tank cleaning/water change on the weekend.

So, my question is, if I remove their host, will they be OK? I guess I could leave the section that they seem to like the most intact and just get rid of most of it if that would be best.

In the wild, they locate host anemones by smell.

If you don't have an anemone for them, all other hosts are pretty much equal.

That's good to hear. It's just been nice to see them nestle up in the hair algae instead of drifting around the tank so much, but, it really does need to know.

Thanks for the input, guys.

When I had removed a clownfish hosting sea anemone from the aquarium. It's resident (captive bred), clownfish became depressed, stopped eating, and just lingered around the anemones last known address.

At the time I was fed up with E. quadricolor BTA's's's's's's making a mess of my corals. Came to regret selling the large H. crispa I previously had in favor of a RBTA, couldn't wait to sell off the last of those overgrown majano's!

My clowns have had a few choices as to hosts but never have taken to any one of 3 bta's. Haven't even looked at them. I had a GBTA that didn't make it that the female started checking out just prior to it's death.

So they have been with the scraper, powerheads, return outlet and now a depression in the sand that they cleared out with their tails. They have done this one before.

So today I'm going to fill that spot in and keep it that way, hoping hey will look at the different corals that I have in addition to the 3 btas
