I think my reef is older than most here and you guys are geting much too stressed over this thing. I have changed 100% of the water a few times and gone without any changes for many months, never noticed any differences. I have used 100% NSW and 100% ASW, never noticed any difference (except NSW is better. I usually change 15 or 20 gallons every two months in my 100 gallon reef. I use all different types of salt. Haven't noticed any difference. I don't have any test kits newer than about 15 years old. Doesen't seem to matter. After enough time at this you can look at the tank and know what the fish are thinking.
KDodds can too. After you get the tank to the point where nothing dies or gets sick you can kind of take it easier more or less. A stable tank tends to stay stable unless you do something stupid. If your changing 100% of the water and losing fish, your tank had a problem in the first place.
Just take it easy guys, it's a hobby and no one will die if we screw up once in a while. I have been doing this over fifty years and I still do stupid things but I figure it's a learning experience.
Anyway IMO changing 100% of the water is fine if your water is good to start with. If your tank is a mess changing 100% of the water is still fine. Your fish may be slightly stressed for a while but they will get over it.
Have a great stress free day.
