This smasher came in with some Tampa Bay live rock. It's now a pet, so I'd like to know a bit more about it. Can I get a species ID from this pic?

It's currently living in the fuge of a 90 gallon, and will probably get a 10 gallon of its own. Will I be able to wean it to clam and squid meat?

Nice Mantis

I got one out of some Gulf Rock and I still haven't identified mine yet, he doesn't come out of his rock at all though which sucks so I can't get a picture. Could it be a Peacock Mantis? Is there any good sites out there for Gulf of Mexico Mantis shrimps?

welcome to RC killer. the only good site ive found for mantis is www.blueboard.com they have pics of all sorts but i cant remember if they specify gulf or not, by category. most of the pics do tell where they were taken though. hope that helps, mostly just wanted to welcome you.

it is probably a n wenn but it is hard to tell. Color is usually not a good indicator for an ID because several mantis shrimps have the same color. If you can get a shot of him from the front that would help.

Actually, a shot from the back makes it easier to id N. wennerae and N. bredini. On one of these threads in the past few days I described how to id N. wennerae based on the telson teeth.

This is a fairly common N. wennerae coloration and I'm pretty sure that is what it is.
