I bet thats going to smell real ripe soon.
With proper water changes to hold the Ammonia below 1 ppm, it shouldn't smell much at all.
Nice rock Kreeger. Follow the TBS instructions and you'll have a heck of a tank.

not my rock docklink, its the original posters, Grand Wazoo.
Still bet its going to have some nasty die off. Theres some much on the rock some had to of died in shipping and collection.
Nice looking rock though

My apologies Kreeger and Grand Wazoo. Still, if Grand Wazoo was careful in keeping those sponges wet and out of the air, things should go reasonably well. Smaller water volumes do need to be watched more closely for ammonia spikes, though.

Wow! Thats some nice rock. Richard is a cool guy too. I am going to have to go over there and pick some rock up from him soon.

Why do you say that? Frequent water changes are keeping the ammonia below 1.

Because when sponge dies it stinks real bad, and that rock is covered in sponge
Thats all
Erik

For what it is worth, I have had my sponge encrusted TBS rocks for nearly a year now, and have had little die off. In fact, they are growing now.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Erik,
How much experience with TBS do you have? We have received 4 shipments over the past 3 years and have had no problems at all.
As long as you receive and unpack your rock the same day that it is shipped, and follow TBS's instructions, you should have no problems.

The smell associated with curing is the scent of the things rotting in the water and decaying. Thus, if you take great care you can elimante this step by making sure your rock is mostly alive when you put it in the tank. Less dead stuff = less rot = less smell. Since TBS is in the states, the rock can go from their facility to in your home in under 12 hours in most cases, so the stressfull part of shipping is avoided. They are shipped in water too to help further eliminate death. Amonia in my tank was >.25 12~ hours after putting the new rock in.

Why would the sponge die? I didn't buy sponge to smell the smell of it dead. I intend to keep it alive--isn't that what the hobby is about?

Activated Carbon will greatly lessen the smell. Plus it's all under water... you know why toilets have water in them?

I bought some rock from TBS three weeks ago and it had almost no die off whatsoever. All of my corals, feather dusters, ananomes, algae, etc. are still just as active and really even more so today. I think the key is he collects one day, places the coral in buckets of water, brings it back to holding tanks, then the next day he boxes it in 4 heavy mil bags with plenty of water, then sends it directly to you via air freight. It's from the ocean to your tank in 24 hours, but it never leaves the water for more than a couple of minutes at a time (at most). Live rock receives that much stress from storms passing through. As long as you provide a reasonable enviroment in your tank your rock will keep most of it's life. And it is from shallow Gulf Coast waters so it is even used to temperature fluctuations to a point. I keep my tank at 74 degrees and the rock is doing very well. I don't know if it would do worse at 78-80. Also, I gave it full light from day 1. Now I added about 25 lbs to the top rocks in my 90 gallon tank so it was a minimal amount (But I ordered only 15, he's generous on the weight). But my ammonia NEVER went up to a measurable degree. Granted, my nitrites had been at zero for about 2 weeks when I put the rock in there and I had a large volume of water for the amount of rock. And I did 20% water changes once a week. But I did expect more die off also. It didn't happen. Maybe I'm not out of the woods yet, but it still looks very good. I have no reason to believe Grand Wazoo will not have a similar experience.
