I woke up this morning and found one of my Derasa's in the wierdest shape......the left shell was broke in half right down the middle.....right side fully in tact and the front part of the left shell was fine.....but the whole back left side was gone....well it was laying beside the clam......I have never seen anything like this in all my time keeping tanks....has anyone ever seen this or heard of this......it was like something was trying to break it in 4ths.....needless to say clam is dead...I did find a nassuris snail inside of it but I am sure it is because the tissue was so exposed......wierd

The only thing that I know of that can do that kind of damage to a clam shell is a mantis...but I didn't know they liked clam meat. That is weird, the mussles of a clam are very strong maybe this peticular clams shell was thin in places like microfractures that when it jerked it cracked.

I have had a caribean pistol break right through live rock with the snap just to get some food out.
I have no idea what in the world it was....the two others sitting beside it are fine and are still fine to this day...I have been looking high and low for a mantis but like I said I have no idea where in the world it would have come from. Might just have been on of those unexplainables?????? Like I said in all my time I have never seen anything like it....the front part where the clam closed up was so strong I couldn't open it but the back left hand side of the shell was just gone.....Who Knows...
