WHat insurance company do you USE!?

I have been reading a lot of "check your policy, bla bla bla. I tlaked to my insurance agent and they were shifty as well as the adjuster. He would say the tank isnt covered but if it was vandalized "x" way it would be (hint hint) but still, they would not say they would actualy cover home damage under renters insturance and the home owner would have to have it. Well, if I dont get insurance for anything but a stolen stereo, why the (explanatory word) am I paying $39 a month with a $250 deductable for a $1000 stereo???

I dont like my company any more and need a new one. What all do you all use? Well, I am sure the ones that have insurance HAVE checked thier policy, so:

1) Who do you use

2) What do they cover?

GEICO, I like the Geiko but in the 40 or so years with them I have had a few small accidents and damages to my house. They paid right away no questions asked. They just put a roof on my house and painted my car due to large hail stones. I "almost" always get a person on the phone 24 hours a day.

I've never been in the insurance business....booooooring! But I do know a little of the policy language.Damage to the landlords property by your tank should be covered by the liability section of any renters policy-----unless such damage is is SPECIFICALLY excluded, and I doubt it is. Last I looked, the liability of a renters policy is about the same as an owners policy. Damage to your tank itself may not be covered, though. Damage to your own personal property is usually more limited than damage to your real property. Also, damage to other's property under the liability section should not be subject to a deducible.

Just my 2 cents: Insurance of any kind is designed to protect against real financial hardship. A stolen stereo hardly qualifies. The Ins co will pay more to process a small claim than they pay you, and those costs are passed on. Carry the largest deductible you can afford and save some money, that won't apply to the liability section anyhow. Many renters need the liability section more than the personal property coverage.

The last insurance person I spoke with (from Amica - I don't have a policy, but they're the ones I'd go with if I did pick one up) said that water damage to my home (I own the condo) from aquarium flooding would be covered as "ensuing damages." Water damage to the unit underneath me (I'm on the 3rd floor) would be handled by the large, general liability coverage. They didn't have a specific "aquarium coverage" section or clause (and indeed, I'm pretty sure the insurance wouldn't cover the actual losses associated with the aquarium itself), but the "ensuing damages" thing would cover home damage.

If you're having trouble getting a clear answer, ask the person you're on the phone with to talk to a claims person and ask about "ensuing damages."

My main concern was for my 2k plasma TV if it decided to take a walk. If someone came in for that, I am sure they would be more than happy to take my guns, laptops, computers, jewelry etc. All that alone would be in the high $$ if my dog didnt eat them first. Since I was getting insurance, I was reading here about tanks which made me think.... Yes, I fully understand the tank itself would not be covered as that would be a manufacturing defect. Now from that defect, or, me leaving a pump on too long in the ATO, or, anything else for that matter, I wanted to know if structure was covered. What they said was "any improvement I make that was not reimbursed (through a lower rent for the month) by the landlord. Landlords structure or real property needs to be on his policy!? The idea of having it on MY policy is to re-leave the landlords worry, pr say. Now, here is the real kicker, ready boys and girls? The landlord is my dad. I had to get renters insurance because they will not give home owner insurance cause the place does not have a up to date coded roof and electrical wiring (place was built in 72). I would have to rewire the whole place and put a roof on to get full home owners coverage.

State Farm...
99% of the time is the cheapest around...
well, so long as you don't file a claim...
then they drop you like its hot

I have USAA on renters insurance for an apartment. I carry extra premiums for electronics, jewelry, cameras, computers, and yes my tank. To the tank at hand my liability covers my neighbors below if a catastrophe happens but if the apartment burns up it covered. I spoke with them an they had someone contact me to go over the details and why it is so expensive. I emailed them copys of my receipts and a few pics and not only is my tank and equipment covered but my fish and corals as well. As long as I am willing to pay the extra coverage which by the way is pennies on the dollar.

I thought thats what renters insurance was for? I would assume any place that is rented out would have insurance on it through the owner and comes out of the rent?

I use AAA and it costs about $100 for the year. It covers everything

no policy covers "everything"

ask them, "if a Chinese satellite falls out of orbit and hits my house, do you cover that?"

answer, "ahhhh, did that actually happen?"

"no. not yet."

"then don't worry about it, but if it does happen, then no we don't cover that!"

lol

Actually, you will get "you have to write it up and give it to our adjusters and they will decide". Thats what I got from the rep. I am like, so, I am paying for something that you get to decide yes or no at will after the fact?

What the...............???? :thumbdown

I live in NYC and rent with a big reef tank. My renters covers any damage up to 100,000. I had to add water for MY apt and they only offer 10,000 worth, which i still accepted. I asked if i could insure my livestock and they laughed at me. Geico

Years ago I had an electrical fire caused by something with my tank. They never pinned it to exactly what piece of equipment. The tank actually exploded from the heat and put out the fire. All state obviously covered everything including the tank/equipment and all my live stock. I save all me receipts now to make it easier.

Good example, but the damage would be covered under any homeowners policy. Most policy language covers all damage to real property, then lists some "excepts"; war, floodwater, wear & tear are common "excepts". Falling satellites aren't listed as an "except". Coverage to personal property isn't defined this way; it lists what is covered, not what is not. You can buy back coverage for many classes of personal property.

ya, I was just fun'n around. seems like every insurance company covers everything until you actually need them to cover something crazy then their lawyers get involved. insurance companies are in the business of making money, not paying out money lol

The insurance the landlords carry covers the structure. If a tenant is directly responsible for the damage then they are liable for the damage regardless of whether the landlord or insurance company pays the damages. Whoever pays will be coming after you for the damages. Renters insurance covers you if you are found liable and can also include insurance for your personal belongings. Hope that clears it up some.

Travelers could give a flying F what happened when my 210 broke because they essentially said it was caused by me in some fancy jargon I can't remember. Luckily there was no damage to my house so I wasn't in any real dilemma, but if there was, they were not covering it.
