Sorry for the ultra newb question but I've been looking into purchasing one or two clowns, and keep seeing "true" percula's referenced, and I was wondering what makes one "true" and I guess the others not true?
A true percula clown typically has darker/wider black around its white stripes where the "false percula" ocellaris clownfish tend to have simply a thin black line around their white stripes. IMO the ocellaris always seem to be more vivid orange but that might be due to lack of black trim but the trues I would prefer. Some people claim the false to be just tank bred, this isn't true. They can be found in the wild too.
When people talk about true/false perculas they're typically referring to Amphiprion percula (AKA "True percula") and Amphiprion ocellaris (AKA "False percula"). Ocellaris are sometimes called false perculas because the two species look a lot like each other.
