Does anyone have any idea what my shrooms are doing? These ruffly looking things were comming out of the mouths of some of them. I had just got done adding Maracyn 2 when I noticed them, but I didn't notice if they were doing it before I added it or not. Afte a few minutes they were back to normal.

They are expelling their guts (mesenterial filaments). Possibly due to stress. Usually not an issue.

Thank you. do you think it was from adding the Maracyn 2? because I still have 3 more days of dosing to go.

Very well could be. Why were you dosing in the reef to begin with? Is a fish ill?

Yes, my yellow tang has something wrong with it and I was told to use the Maracyn 2, but I have the feeling that it may be to late for poor bubbles, she's pratcicaly nothing but skin and bones now :(

Aww. :( It is always advisable to use a hospital tank to medicate any inhabitant. I'm not sure about maracyn 2, but there are plenty of medications that are definitely not reef safe. Some will effectively kill all invertebrate life including everything on your live rock. I don't want to scare you into thinking this is what has happened as I don't know for sure, but just giving you a heads up about the quarantine/hospital tank for the future.

I would run some carbon over the next few days along with a water change to get all that you can out of there.

Thanks for the heads up, I do know that some meds are bad for a reef, but I was told that this stuff is safe and I was glad to hear that because I'm affraid that the stress of trying to catch her would put her over the edge. I have 3 days of medicating left and I will watch my corals and stuff a little closer from now on to make sure they are not having a bad reaction. I was also told to turn off the skimmer while medicating and then do a big water change at the end.

I was feeding her the sheets of algae but I think she ate more of the frozen SW mix pack than anything els (algae, krill, shrimp and a few other things in there) and no she isn't eating anything now, honestly I can't believe she's still alive because she hasn't eaten in so long.

Yeah, unfortunately some fish will go on a starvation diet for whatever reason. Maybe she'll come around, you just never know. Are there any other fish in the tank that are bugging her, like damsels etc...?

What's your most current water params btw??

None of the other fish are bugging her (she ruled the tank :) ) my params are:
amm 0
NO2 0
NO3 0
PH 8.4
SAl 1.026
PO4 0
Ca2 440
Alk 2

Tangs do rule. :D I'm assuming the alk is in meq/l? Even so, it's pretty low. Needs to be between 2.5-4 meq/L or 7-11dkh. Large fluxuations in alk can cause major issues. Could be a contributing factor to what's going on here.

How about temp?

Yeah, I keep having a problem keeping my alk high enough. The temp stays around 79. Honestly I think the problem started with a dimond gobby, after being in the DT about a week it got these red looking marks around its mouth, then a day or two later the marks went away but a day after that he died. Well then Bubbles got the same red looking marks on her side, the marks went away but she is breathing hard and not eating or acting right. I know it's my fault for not using a QT but at the moment I cant afford to set one up. So no new fish for me untill I can get one.

I hear ya. Could be a bacterial infection but hard to say. You can dose some Arm & Hammer baking soda to keep your alk up. I use a diy 2-part that is baking soda for the alk, and calcium carbonate for the calcium. Keeping the two balanced is key for reef tanks.

Use this calculator when dosing baking soda (or any additive) to your tank. I dose daily and use this calc at least weekly. ;)

Thaks for the link it will come in very handy. I just started dosing with lime water. I was under the impression that it would help stablize both the cal and alk.

Yes it will, but you still have to get the params in balance before you start the kalk. The kalk is for maintenance, not for adjusting the params. I'd give the alk a little boost with baking soda then go ahead with the kalk. Just be sure to test before and after dosing to make sure you are on the right track. ;)

Thanks for tagging my thread btw. :D

Thanks so much for the info I have a Kent 2 part for cal and alk and I will get the params in order. BTW your 180 build is looking great.

No problem. Hope my advice does some good for you. :) The kent product works well too, just pricey. Once you get the alk and ca where you want it, just use either the kalk or 2 part for dosing. One is all you need. Thanks for stopping by my thread. It's quite an upgrade from my 40g. A lot more work.

Your advice has help alot and I will work on it, thanks so much. It sure is quite the upgrade but your doing a great job and I will be tagging along to see the progress. Well I have to turn in for the night, got to go to work in about 5 hrs. It's been very helpful talking to you, thanks.
