What is critical level for ammonia?

I just received my first shippment yesterday of TBS. Everything is doing great and looks fine. My ammonia levels are at .50 right now and I did a 6 gal water change. My tank is a 46 gal bowfront. I waited for about 15 minutes after the water change and re-checked the ammonia. It is still between .25 and .50....what is considered the critical range. Meaning how high should I let the ammonia get before I do my next change? Or should I be trying to get it back to 0 at this point.
