What is diff between ACRO and Monti?

My tank has been established for almost 2 years and I've never had any luck in keeping acropora. However, all my montipora- caps and digitatas- have always grown well. why do i keep killing acropora? I suppose I should say that all my params are within acceptable range, with my calcium being a little low (consistently around 360-380). I've mostly positioned them high in the tank and with moderate flow. i do not have a wave maker and the flow tends to be constant- could this be a contributing cause?

The primary difference, AFAIK, is in the corallite structure. Montipora species have, literally, "mountain pores", with a distinctive moundlike corallite structure. The polyps differ as well. Acropora, literally, is "sharp pore", alluding to their protruding corallites. Look at pics between the two and you will see what I am referring to.

Acropora's are generally more demanding in their care. Monti's are far more forgiving for chemistry mishaps. Acros need higher and more stable calcium and alkalinty. They also much prefer low nitrates and phosphates (0 really). I can honestly not kill my digitata if I try to. But if my alkalinity dips too low, my acros immediately become unhappy.

Your calcium needs to be up over 400 and alk between 7 and 10 dKH (preferable to the higher end IME).
