three days ago I noticed my 7" blue hippo tang came down with some ich, I got the proper treatment as I work at the local fish store. today I was watching my tang and he swam right up next to my extremely large spiny sea urchin and practically laid on him. the urchin seemed to be picking at the ich..? has anyone else seem this or heard about this? I have a video of it but I don't know how to attach it.

Most likely the tang is just seeking some relief and looking for a cleaning . Not sure what you treated your tank with but I'm assuming its some kind of reef safe product?? Quit frankly a waste of money.

I must admit all the reef safe treatments I have seen are not at all effective. I would also guess the tang is looking for some sort of relief.

Yes it is a reef safe product. It's Formalin MS, I was going to set up a 20 gallon hospital tank for him and do a 30 minute "dip" like the instructions say but I will not be able to catch him in my tank without tearing the whole thing apart...

Formalin MS IS NOT a reef safe product and does nothing for Ich.

On the box it says you can add it right to your tank... I have only done two small doses I hope it doesn't hurt anything. I guess I'll do a big water change and get the $30 bottle of NO-ICH.

When I woke up this morning and turned the lights on the tang quickly swam up to the sea urchin and continued laying against him. I'm scared he is going to get punctured by sea urchin, but he seems to be looking better.

there are some ich stickies you may find helpful. The tang and all fish should be removed and treated with copper or follow the tank transfer method. Also, the DT should be fallow for at least 11 weeks to rid the tank of ich. just my 2 cents

Is this what you're using?

If so, you might want to check out the link below and these two selected quotes taken from that article:

"Formalin will kill saltwater aquarium invertebrates and algae, so it cannot be used in a reef aquarium."

"Treating Reef Aquariums
Brooklynellosis cannot be adequately treated in reef aquarium situations because formalin is highly toxic to saltwater aquarium invertebrates. Infected aquarium fish must be removed to a quarantine tank for treatment either in situ or through dipping."

Stickies? DT?
Thanks for the info on the formalin, I tried looking it up online but didn't find anything...
I'll set up a hospital tank tonight.

Stickies are permanent threads at the top of forums, usually educational. I believe the ich ones are in the fish disease forum.

DT=display tank

Just out of curiosity do you have other fish in your tank and are they showing any symptoms.
