Upon further investigation it was the shrimp molted and explains why the skimmer went nuts

Why do you think the shrimp molting made your skimmer go nuts?

I've had shrimp molt before, but it never affected my skimmer. I would guess your skimmer going nuts was simply coincidental.

Skimmer wouldn't be affected by a molt most likely something else.
