What is in your refugium

Will be starting a refugium for my 120Gal Reef Tank, what should I stock it with, is live sand and LR OK, or is miracle mud better, thanks again.

about 4" of LS, lots of LR, some cheato, and a ton of pods, little snails.
what is cheato, and where do I get it:D

I live rock first half, deep sand second half, and chaeto above rock/substrate. The chaeto grows very well, and I pull out and toss a handfull a week. I tried feeding excess chaeto to tangs/foxface but was messy and stray strands ended up all over. Not their favorite food anyway. I also have a couple mexican turbos and some astrea snails, and a banished emerald crab that just ate one of my refugium turbos. I had a ton of amphipods but population dwindling badly. Not sure why. Maybe I should add some food? but that would sorta defeat the nutrient export purpose.

Cheato is short for Cheatomorpha - which is a kind of macro algae used to export nutrients and harbour pods.

I run both grape caulerpa and chaeto in mine... The caulerpa does a better job and grows faster, and the tangs eat it.

usually other reefers... they have a law against selling it....

only in CA is it illegal to sell it.

I have mineral mud (caribsea) capped with about 3" of live sand, with live rock rubble and cheato. Can't really say if I know that the mud has had a benefit on my tank but everything is a lot better since i ditched my wet/dry.

It's illegal for good reason there. It grows too easily in the local waters I believe, choking out other forms of life, and it's not native to the area.

The question is... how did it get in the ocean to begin with... some stupid person flushed it in the toilet...

Why? who knows...... And with all the fertilizer that is overflown into the oceans... algae will grow...

2 yrs ago we had an epic red tide cause of the rains....

Calerpa Toxifolia

Calerpa Toxifolia

I saw a show on the Discovery Channel a while back aobut the calerpa not being legal to sell in Cali becasue of the havoc it ha casued off the coast . The main thing is that it is Calerpa Toxifolia ...it is really toxic and grows really fast ...I dont remeber the origins of the stuff but it has really thrived in the waters of the west coast . The other issue it has is it outgrows everything ...choking out the other valuable and beneficial life . Also ..they did a genetic study and determined that the Toxifolia that is present is all from one source ...

So the calerpa I have found easy to propagate is the Calerpa Prolifera ....thast what I have been using in my Refugium .

I have a new setup... but in the fuge is LR rubble, a couple pounds of Premium Aquatics' rock pool muck, and chaeto. The "muck" had crazy life in it -- really kickstarted my tank.
