What is it people like about reef tanks?

Being serious this time ....

It's the ecosystem (which is why I would never start a tank with dry rock) and the ways in which the various organisms interact. My younger son peers into the tank every night with a small flashlight looking for cool little critters. Priceless!

There are so many reefsafe species that its only really because we are greedy that we want things that don't fit. I'm a fish guy but find the limitations of fish only more of a problem than a few fish that might eat something. By limitations I mean you are only using a small proportion of the what the tank could keep. A full reef is something to behold where as even the best fish only can never compete with even a half decent reef imo. It also expands the hobby massively. If I only kept fish I would lose my interest far quicker than growing new coral species, colouring them up, propagating them. Fish might be fun to breed but most are far outside the experience of even expert breeders.
