So my gf recently bought me a christmas tree rock from an online retailer. Ive had it for around 2 weeks or and noticed something which I thought was just some discoloration on the rock which the stuff grows on. Take a look. It looks like a clam of sorts and if I touch it then it closes.

Yep some kind of mussel or clam. Nothing you need to worry about.

I had exactly the same thing on exactly the same kind of Christmas tree rock. they must like it!

Where did you get the rock from? This one was bought from vivid aquariums.

I didnt think I would have to worry about it. I hope it grows!

It will grow as fast as the nutrients and mineral content allow it. You will probably not notice much. It looks like an oyster species, but hard to tell. Those kind of NPS filter feeders tend to grow a lot slower in captivity than in the wild unlike a lot of stuff in our tanks.

I have several of those in the tank, some even on turbo snails - consider them freebee filter feeders
