What is the best HOB filter?

The Hagen Aquaclears are the best HOB filters I've ever used. They put out great flow, are silent and run forever. I use them on my nano tanks to create flow without adding heat to the tank. I have one that's been running nonstop for almost 6 years. (Except for about two years ago when I finally removed it to clean it) Haven't ever cleaned the new one on another tank, it's been running for 5 years.

FYI, I don't use the filter media, they're filled with live rock rubble. Once in a while I'll drop a bag of carbon into one but that's only if things don't look right.

I agree 100% with Agu.. they're amazing filters. I've used them on everything from my first 10 gallon setup.. to my 75 gallon Freshwater Discus tank.. I have an AC 70 filter on my tank right now. Love it.

Agu.. do you find that the live rock rubble becomes a nitrate/detritus trap? my rubble is getting pretty dirty.

Sorry for the late reply, missed your question. I use the rubble for mounting frags so I dig through it a couple of times a month. Pretty much releases any crud into the tank to feed the corals and detritus eaters. So no, it hasn't been a problem.

Thanks for the response. Mine gets kinda dirty.. I'll have to disturb it at least weekly to make sure it doesn't become a nitrate trap.

I use and Aquaclear on my 40g for carbon and a place to put my ph probe from my Aquacontroller. They are solid HOB's. :)

they're really the only ones I'd use, to be honest.

I got 'hooked' on them in my freshwater days.. and haven't changed since

Add me to the Aquaclear fan cub, they're great HOB's. If you do get one, keep the intake away from the sand, or any critters that could get sand in the intake. When I had my cichlid tank, I had a big red zebra that loved spitting sand in the intake of my Aquaclear 500. Took out a couple of impellers for me before I finally put a sponge filter on the intake.
