What is the Deal with Cyano?

had a bloom of Cyano again. Treated and added a phosban reactor. hasn't come back, it definately kills some SPS's and they contimue to have tissue die back 2 weeks after getting rid of the cyano.

Is this normal?

Bob,

Can't believe you went through this again? I knew you and I were discussing my tanks cyano break out but I was always reluctant to use a treatment to treat the whole tank.

So I guess I went natural and did 25% water changes every week (pain in the *** since I only do 10% every two weeks. Just being honest). Changed all three of my filter socks (one from the display tank, one from the refugium and last one is from my frag tank) ever week, rather than letting them get filthy and over flow. Then I just did some manuel work and siphoned as much cyano from the display tank. Moved and upgraded some powerheads and directed them to the area where it began to grow. And so far nothing, hope I don't jinx myself. This took about 3 weeks or me. Good luck.

I tried that the first time and lost several SPS's. I was aggresive this time and treated immediately. I just don't understand why some the SPS's are still loosing tissue after the cyano has been gone for 2 weeks.

Did you loose any corals?

Nothing lost. Just made sure my alk/cal/PH/mag/sal/temp were always the same when doing the 25% water change. That was the biggest pain in the a$$, it made a good dent to my test kits too!

I was scared of loosing some corals due to the cyano growing on the base they were on. But as time went by the cyano seemed to disappear.

Does the cyano grow on your corals? Usually you will see it in areas of low flow with elevated phos. Could something else be killing your corals?

Correct my statement that I said, ora atleast be more descriptive. I stated cyano was growing on my base. Base as in the frag plug that they were glue too. =) I've never seen cyano grow on a coral iteslf. I think by growing around and near a coral I guess it can irritate it to the point that it can die (long period of time)?

The Cyano I had was growing on the SPS's. I find it hard to believe I have a flow problem. I have 2 tunze 6055's and 2 6000's running on my 120.

Wow, didn't know you can have cyano grow on a SPS. Yeah, you don't have a problem on flow for sure. Hmmmm, can any chemist jump in on what can be fueling this growth? I have no idea...

J as I mentioned before it wasn't that bad this time. I treated right away. it disappeared and had some fairly significant RTN on some SPS's even a couple weeks after. Owe and I undertreated to be on the safe side.

Bob, are you using Red Slime Remover?

Personally, I believe the problem is that you are only treating the symptom, and not the cause. I don't think using a product to get rid of cyano is going to help in the long run. You need to figure out the underlying cause of the cyano, which is going to be a buildup of nutrients in the system. You need to review what is going into the tank vs. what is coming out. Start a series of water changes, vacuum the sand bed, use a powerhead or turkey baster to blast the detritus out of the rockwork, siphon off what cyano you can every few days and blast it off of the corals to keep it from smother the corals, etc. I typically throw a filter sock on, and use the turkey baster on the rockwork and blast the sand bed every few days if cyano starts to appear. It's growing for a reason, and that will always be an input vs. export issue. Good luck.
