What is the point of frag tanks?

As the title says, what is the point of frag tanks? Is it so when you frag your own corals you can take them out of the DT, stabilize them and trade/sell? Is it kind of like a QT for new bought corals? I just don't get it.

Why not just grow out your frags in your display tank?

I assume it is for sell/trade. If I had one, that's what I would do. Turn the hobby into a small business.

I'm fairly business minded - I may wind up doing the same thing if I can sneak another tank past the wife!

Ahh I see. Might not be a bad idea. I know in this area people sell 2 stalks of Xenia for $55!!!!

YES.... A frag tank is simply just as it sounds.

When you frag a pcs from a coral you put in a frag tank. This makes the coral smaller in the main tank & also lets the frag to grow on around the rock. So by creating a frag tank. All this growing can go on in another tank without disterbing the main tank

A frag tank is not only for people who want to sell off frags, but most people use them to help prevent over growth in the tank. I know several people who do this to keep there tank from being cluttered. As a result, I'm sure they don't want to keep a lot of the same thing therefore back to to the sell/trade part.. Just my point of view.

I do it to justify getting new corals. So when pick up new coral, I tell my wife that I traded frags in for credit, thus not spending money on my addiciton.

I find myself using the frag tank that is attached to my reef tank to hold the corals I accidentally break off when playing in the display tank!!

Then of course I try and sell the frags to buy more corals, that I can add to the display, and accidentally break off to replenish the frag tank.

I haven't ever owned any corals so please excuse my stupidity. But are corals that fragile and brittle that they snap that easily?

Many kinds of SPS tend to snap off pretty easy, just this past weekend I wanted to trim one coral, I accidentally dropped my cutters onto another one down further in the tank, added 3 decent frags to the frag tank!!!
