What is the purpose of the Japanese method of lighting?

If I may ask, what is the Japanese method of lighting? Never heard of it.

The japanese tank that I have seen use more of an "accent lighing" style than we use here. We use large bulb, large output lighting systems to light the entire tank equally, whereas some of the japanese systems I've seen use more of a "spotlight" effect. They have dedicated spots on their corals. Provides more targetted lighting, plus allows for better color rendition. Some corals look better under different "colored" lights, and this type of system allows each major coral to be "highlighted" differently.

A more complex system, to be sure, but visually pretty appealing...

FWIW,
Kevin

i love those accent lights and would love to try it. where do u get those pendants. i especially like the clip on ones.
- their way is just what anemone said.

yes, pics or link please!

Speaking of japanese aquarium styles .. if you guys haven't seen Amano's planted tanks then you really have to check them out:

That is one example and although I am not particularly a fan of planted tanks, his are works of art.
There was a whole gallery of images taken at his lab.. a huge warehous type of space with rimless tanks as far as the eye can see, I wish I could find that link...

can't find the one I was looking for, but here's a taste:

Now, his tanks are generally acrylic IIRC, lidless and rimless lit with pendants.
Anyways, sorry to get off topic there .. I want to see the japanese reef lighting style!

Dirtyreefer other than the pendents at the top, the coloring of that reef doesn't look TOO different from the "American" tanks, but I love that angel in the middle. I went to that website smp, and those planted tanks are amazing!! Especially this one:
