what is the smallest size tank a Seahorse can go in

Depends on the species. My opinions would be a pair of Capensis (which require cool water) can go in a 15 gal. Barbouri I would say a pair in nothing smaller than a 20 High. The rest of the larger seahorses I'd recommend a 30 gal minimum.

oh ok well i was lookin into getting a pair that would go in the smallest tank and getting info on then

how can melve have a seahorse in a 2 gallon and people say you need it in a 15 at least. i like the Hippocampus reidi and i wanted to put two in a 10 gallon tank is that ok.

he has dwarf seahorses.../ they get 1.5-2 inches tall, but need daily hatchings of baby brine shrimp... thats why he has some in a 2 gallon ;)

reidi get at least 8 inches tall... and you want 3x the ADULT size of the horse while a 29 isn't quite that, its 'good enough' that we recommend that as the minimum size for reidi.

no, they won't beable to do well in a ten gallon.

you got a reply via pm...

there are great sites on seahorse.org and syngnathid.org about dwarves: if you want to have a ten gallon, thats the biggest that I'd recommend. and you'd want more than a pair, I replied that to ya too ;)

NO live rock. seriously... it would kill them

and you need more than a pair for a ten gallon tank... research, research, research!!!

yes, but in our tanks they have nowhere to go to escape things such as hydroids.

you CAN get hydroid free live rock, or treat your own with panacur. if you use live rock, and then start feeding out alot of bbs, you'll start getting hydroids. WHICH can and will eat baby seahorses, and possibly kill adults with thier stings.

these horses are TINY!!!

I wouldn't even go with a ten for dwarves, I would use a five gallon at the largest...you'll need a lot of them to have enough in a ten gallon

Particularly with dwarves, density is something to be considered very carefully. Dwarves do not hunt their food.. they just hitch and wait for it to drift past close enough to reach so the amount you feed has to match the tank, not the number of dwarves - if you don't have enough dwarves in the tank to eat it you have alot of uneaten bbs. I have had 36 dwarves in a 5 gallon and that worked pretty well. I have had 58 in a 10 gallon and that works fine right now I have about 25 in the 5 gallon and about 35 in the 10 (hard to keep count of the fry).
Also, if you put 2 in a 5 you won't even be able to see them much. Two would be much better in a 2 gallon or so - that's what I'm going to set up for my granddaughters.
Hydroids are killers - I lost my first entire herd to hydroids. I currently use sand and live rock and live macro and snails but everything in the tank is treated with Panacur for 3 days before being added - the only exception is the bbs which are decapped with bleach to avoid hydroids - take this threat seriously with dwarves. And if you do use panacur do some research on it too.. it kills many snails, corals, stars, etc.
