What is the typical depth of nano substrate?

I have a jbj 12g nano that I'm setting up right now. I'm using CaribSea Agra-Alive Fiji Pink. The whole bag puts a depth of the sandbed at about 3.25"

Thanks for any suggestions.

Is that the 20# bag? I am getting a 12g cube, too, and ordered the arag-alive 20# indo-pacific black sand. I was hoping to make about a 1.5-2" sand bed, so looks like i'll have some leftover.

If you like the look, I say keep it. As long as you can seed it with sand stirring type creatures i'd think you'd be ok. I've not kept anything above 2" in a small tank, tho, so can't say for sure. I had a dsb in my 65g that I didn't have problems with, but it did start to get anoxic black layers underneath which weren't asthetically appealing. I will be keeping my under 2" for asthetic reasons.

I have a 3"-4"' DSB in my nano, with a plenum (burried underground filter plate) beneath it. My nitrates are always"0"

After the water cleared and spreading out the 20lb bag even across the bottom, I actually only have 2.5". Sorry for the mis calculatio, but I couldn't see :P.

Thanks, rsteagall, for the update. I think that I will just pour it in and adjust to my liking. At least i'll for sure have enough:)
