What is this algae and what eats it?

Anybody has experience with this algae?

It grows slowly and is pretty, but now that I am starting to get SPS, it is in the way. My tangs totally ignore them. So does the lawnmower blenny. Will sea hares work? Thanks!

Sargassum is the brown looking algae. I'm asking about the purplish algae. Sorry for not being clearer.

I might have this same type, I'm not sure, none of the patches are anywher near that large though. This pic you can see once piece of it, I'll try to get a pic of the largest bunch later. You think its the same?

Turbo2oh: yes, I think that is the same kind of algae. And I think the reason is we have the same kind of rocks from Florida. My rocks looked exactly like yours when I started out 6 months ago.
Like I said, they grow slowly; but then it becomes mundane when I have to prune them every few weeks to keep them from choking SPS.

Steve,
Thanks for the link. I'll check that out later. Unfortunately, I'm really busy and can't ship them to you. I throw a buch of them away every few weeks.

Well, thanks anyways.
I didn't really expect you to be able to.
But if you consider it in the future, i'd be glad to pay for some and shipping, if its not a huge expense.

On another note, if i were you, i'd be selling that to the LFS loose or attatched. It would bring good money in Buffalo.

Steve

turbo please post another picture of the red algea you have growing so I can compare it to a deep red grass like algea in my tank:bum:

We have the same Florida rock as well. I am not sure what the name of the purple macro algae is but I can answer your other questions about what eat it. Our Foxface Rabbitfish is doing a great job keeping all of the macro algae and plants growing on the rock under control.

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify though: do you actually have this kind of algae in your tank and the foxface eats it? Sorry; but I just want to make sure before buying a fish.

I am in SLC as well. Can I come by sometimes and take a look at your tank?

Thank you turbo , that is not the same stuff i have growing. mine is more like blades of grass and it is a deep redish purple. Any ideas on what it might be or wht will eat it?

Just in case anyone was interested I recently got 3 of these snails, some type of cowrie I believe, as hitchickers and they bulldozed through all the algae I had (shown in my above posts) in a few days. Astreas/ceriths/nass. weren't touching it.

dkle, I have that exact same type of algea (and interestingly enough I live fairly close to you too). I wouldn't consider it a slow grower though, and I have found it pratically impossible to get rid of. I can pull and trim and scrape, but it will be back worse than ever within a month. As far as a foxface, I tried one and it never touched the stuff. It loved my green macro algea though. In another thread someone said that a tuxedo urchin might eat it. The cowery might be a good idea although I have heard of coweries eating coral. Turbo2oh, did you have any sps in your tank, and if so did the cowery touch them? If anyone finds a solution to this I would like to hear about it.
Thanks

Sorry, don't have any SPS. Though I haven't seen them bother anything else, actually if they wanted to eat some xenia I'd apprecaite it :)
