What is this large shrimp?

I'm thinking this is a hitch hiker that came in with my live rock 3 months ago. He's a good 2 or 3 inches long now.

Mantis Shrimp. They can and will kill and eat your fish so I would remove it or rehouse it in your refugium. They are called "Thumb Busters" for a very good reason, they can split your fingers wide open.

Guess that explains the random clicking I've been hearing. When I first added the LR I found two small pistol shrimp and I've been assuming that there was at least one more that I missed.

He's right to a degree. Your CUC is in more danger than your fish depending on the mantis type. I've housed several smashers with fish without a problem. Not that smashers won't go after fish, but fish aren't their main prey item. Most smashers have spears as well, but don't use them much. Except for the peacock mantis, a hit to your finger may hurt like hell, but probably not split open. I've been smacked more than a few times by mantis shrimp.

Spearers on the other hand will almost definetely be a danger to your fish...

Either way, I'd remove it or rehouse it in your refugium. If you want an accurate identification in regards to type, show this picture in the mantis forum.

Oh yeah. Good luck trying to catch it. Their vision is among the best in the animal kingdom and they are quick and quite elusive. LOL...

A very pretty colored mantis at that, keep him/her or trade it to someone who wants one. I miss my mantis, very interesting critters with personality.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen one quite that red before, unless it's the lighting.

Nice find!

Start a tank dedicated to him.

Edit:
Oh and looking closer, I think you really hit it lucky. That looks like a juvi peacock to me. Odontodactylus scyllarus.

They really get beautiful when they get older. Keep it bro, people pay good money for those.

yea i would most definitely keep him. i would also pay for one lol my lfs hasnt got a mantis shrimp in since early 2014

Brett, if you decide its not for you, please let me know and I would gladly take him off your hands. im in port orange...

He's yours if you want him (assuming I can catch him). I really don't have another place for him and I don't feel comfortable leaving him in the display tank.

I'm hoping to put a bottle trap in the tank tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

So far trapping is not going very well. I've caught a large crab (large enough that I have no idea how he even managed to get through the opening in the bottle), another shrimp, a number of hermits and even a couple of snails.

Oddly enough, on two occasions the bait has completely disappeared (and I'm using a decent size piece of raw shrimp). The only thing I'm able to imagine is that the mantis shrimp was able to enter the trap, grab the bait, and leave the trap with it. If I can get some time tonight I might sit and try to watch the trap in the dark and see if I can catch him while he's in the trap and pull it up before he has a chance to exit.

I've had two. Was able to spear one with a sharpened dowel rod, the other I had to construct a trap. Just bait yours with a piece of grocery store frozen shrimp. They are very fast and hard to catch. My whole office of 70 cheered when I caught it. I'd heed the warn on it hitting you. It's why shrimp boat workers wear chainmail gloves. Better safe than sorry. When I had mine was back in the day you could pick up nice live rock at the airport if you knew where to order it (before the internet). So there was a lot of shelled creatures in the rock. With the mantis constantly hammering on them my redox level was taking some hits.
