What is this mass?

i found this 'mass' when i did some minor reshuffling of rock, it was in the 'shade'. what is it??

Looks like a sponge the i get in my tanks all the time.

I can't tell a lot form the picture but I think I have some too. I've been trying to get it out of my tank but it didn't seem easy to slurp off. If it's sponge that would explain that - I never considered that. Mine is kind of a gross color.
