What is this on my rock (pic) - new tank

The tank has been up and running for 1 week now, believe it or not it already cycled (after day 3 ammonia/nitrite drop to 0 & nitrate 10). I added 3 small chromis 2 days ago and they are fine. The 220 lbs of rock you see was soaking in trash cans in my basement for 3+ months so that would explain the speedy cycle I guess.

Anyways, what is this on my rock? Its appearing on several rocks. Its yellowish gooey or almost even a little fuzzy looking?

looks like a sponge.

planning on more rock?
yeah, eventually, why? look a little bare in the middle? Spent way too much money already in the last 4 months that my wife is not to happy about.

filter feeding sponge, I'll have to read up on them. why is it there?

could also be a fungus, if it bothers you, you can always scrape it off.
fungus? hmm, what would be more common to apear with new water? it would be kinda hard to scrape it off. tank is 31" high.

I wouldn't scrape it off just yet. Fungus first off is not that common in SW. The second pic definitely appears to be a sponge, harmless and desirable in most tanks. The first pic is just hard to tell without more detail.

I'm with you on that one brother...

It is most likely a sponge. Pandora is right about fungi being less common in saltwater. This is due to the fact that most prefer an acidic environment--not really a good match in our tanks. There are some water molds that form in saltwater, but they look like straight-fibered cottonballs.

thanks again guys!! this site is unbelievable awesome as far as getting help and researching.

I had a decorative background up but didn't like it and took it down, The reverse side of it is blue. Was going to try that once I got off my lazy butt. Black does sound cool!
