It kind of looks like an abalone, but best I can tell it doesn't have a shell.
 
That could be a silicone eating nudibranch. The only way to get rid of them is to let your main tank sit free of silicone for 5-8 weeks.
 
No I have a slipper ablalone, and while it is shaped like one...trust me...if its not dam near a foot long...you're okay. Herman freaks people out pretty bad when he makes an appearance.
 
We've tried a few slipper abalones before and they never seem to make it more than a few weeks (if that even) so we've seen them before. And we got them at the Critter from the nano up on the end of the desk, if that's what you are thinking Fanof49ASU...

I would say it's not your basic slipper abalone though. From looking at it when we first saw it, it was almost melted onto the rock - looked exactly like a black sponge, with moving "antennae" though. As Brian mentioned, it doesn't seem to have a shell to the best we can tell, so it doesn't have the shell "vent" holes that the regular abalones have. The frilly skirt around the edges and the antennae do however look a lot like an abalone...

Hmmmm...the quest for an ID continues still.

Could be.....they may have moved it there. They were keeping an eye on it when it was in the rock tank. It was there a couple of weeks ago.
 
Interesting. I thought you might have been thinking of the regular ones they have for sale from time to time...

Did they seem to have any idea what it was?

I think either Chris or Ken identified it.....but they kept it in the rock tank after the id. I dunno.

now that you said that and i looked into the scutus that is what it looks like to me. Ill have to tell my lfs owner that he was wrong :lol: hes usually really good at id's but i guess you cant always get it right in this hobby.
 
After looking around online after Travis' ID and talking to the guys at the Critter...we're pretty sure it's a "scutus antipodes" or an Elephant slug.

from what i read an elephant slug is just another name for the scutus. maybe thats what you meant by your reply though.
 
Yeah, it's a Scutus. They can get to several inches long if they have plenty to eat. Most people consider then reef safe, but a few people claim they tasted of things that didn't want them nibbling on. I like 'em.
