What is this?

Abraham1907

In Memoriam
Ok, so I bought a bunch of LR from my LFS yesterday and I was looking for cool hitchhikers and found this thing. It hasn't really moved since yesterday, and I have no idea what it is. I will now give my best effort to explain this thiong, because my pictures are lacking much desired detail. It is an offwhite color with a slightly brown/tan splotch on it. It has little bumps on it, and I reall think it looks like a tentacle of a starfish or octopus or something. There is also another little ball thing at the end, which I cant tell if it is the end of another tentacle or something.

Anyway, here is the horrible picture. I couldn't zoom in much, because if i did then it got blurry. I actually have 2, one with flash, and one without.

Even if you aren't sure, I would like to hear your ideas of what it might be.

Sorry, dude, it looks like a blurry piece of live rock. I think I know what you're talking about, I've been told it's a type of anemone.

A piture is worth a thousand words...looks like a piece of live rock...I see a white dot on the first pic...any friends have a better camera???

See what? part of your LR? Seriously the blurry pic doesnt help but circling what you want us to see does!

Looks like a tube for a worm to me

I see where you get the tube from the picture, but i can tell you that it isn't one for sure. I really need to get a better picture and i'm working on it.

Are you in Manual Digital Macro mode? Tripod?

LOL

It looks like a tube worm to me as well. not like a feather duster tube worm either. I have seen them im just too noob to know what they are... the ones i seen were white tubes with floresent green tips.

Hey i found a pic of them! this is NOT my tank. The tank is owned by a real nice fella i met on here. I did take this picture tho.

HTH ... I am not sure it will but thats what your pic reminds me of only without the color.

those neon green things are Neomeris vanbosseae. they are an algae. and not what is in question here.

Abraham1907 does the object you are talking about move, or does something come out of the end of it only?

If you see a sticky web coming out of your mystery tube, I'd say you're looking at a vermetid snail. They secrete tubes on rock just like tube worms, and then catch floating bits of food with a mucous net. If, OTOH, you see something that looks like a feather duster coming out the end, it's a worm. Either way, nothing to worry about. You'll see lots more hitchhikers in the weeks/months to come (if the rock is any good), including pods, worms, possibly crabs, macro/microalgaes, tiny snails and more. Enjoy - it's all part of the mystery that is Live Rock :D

Oh, and check out www.melevsreef.com for loads of great info, including a nice hitchhiker ID page.

I know it's not those green things, I don't think it is even a tube at all. I think there might be a little feather duster on a different part of my rock, but this definately isn't one. I got the rock saturday afternoon, and it hasn't moved yet. It REALLY looks like a starfish or octopus tentace. Should I try to poke around at it, because I only have 4 pieces of rock, it will be easy to look at up close.

I have no idea if I was in macro mode, I tried all of them on there and none of them seemed that good. And I'm not using a tripod as photography isn't a hobby of mine and only have a cannon powershot a75 that is more for recreational use. I guess I have to go read the camera manual...

sipunculid

sipunculid

It looks like a sipunculid, or a peanut worm to me. They are unsegmented, hang around in the holes of live rock and look alot like your pic.

They are totally harmless and feed on diatoms and microscopic protists.

With the quality of the photo this isnt a sure fire answer, but it looks alot like one.

Hope this helped,
Caynus

If it hasn't moved, it's not an octopus (which would be a very rare hitchhiker indeed) or starfish. I wouldn't poke it, just leave it, observe it, and read up on hitchhikers. I'm still putting my money on vermetid snail, but (no offense meant) it's not a very good picture so it's hard to tell.

Thanks a lot for all of the help! I moved the rock today to see what it was, and it looks like a big puka shell (like the ones they make neckalces out of). I was kind of depressed to see that it wasn't anything alive, but I still kindof want to know what it is. It's hard and is stuck to the rock... No idea, here are some pictures...
