The top pic is a sponge that is a pita.

The bottom pic is a desirable sponge. Leave it be :)

The top sponge I would kill by leaving the rock out of water for a couple mins, or by carefully pouring H202 Hydrogenperoxide on itand scraping the sponge off gently.

The first pic has zoas on it, I know they can live out of water for alittle bit but will the live long enough for the sponge to die if I take rock out of water

I had a cluster/frag of zoas out of water for over an hour....and they all survived.....lol after I fragged them....lol forgot I didnt put them back in the water XP

EDIT: also are those butterscotch zoas?

From what I've been told the sponge can't live long out of the water. The zoos will be fine for a minute or two. I don't think the sponge would make it that long but maybe someone has a definite answer.

They both look like sponges. However, I had a big algae problem a couple of months ago and had this stuff just like your bottom picture that grew over the rocks. It wasn't hard, but you could peel it off in small sheets using tweezers. I had to keep removing it by hand and it eventually went away. If it is growing noticeably then you may have the same problem.

Any and all sponges will die if removed from water and allowed to breath air even if for a few seconds. When a sponge is removed from water the air will become trapped in the chambers of the sponge causing it to swell. If you take the rock out of the tank and place it in a bucket leaving it for about 15-20 min. the sponge will die. Once placed back into your tank it will slowly turn white and peel away. It will become 2 times it's size now and then just melt away. All sea sponges will die if remove from water even if just for a second. Simple fix Steph, if you want it gone.
